Need More Music?
…Why not Australian music? (Zoidberg? Anyone?)
Anyway - Mel here again with another of my non-John-related posts. However, I imagine that we’re all here (admins and followers alike) because we like discussing, exploring and falling in love with new music. I’m inspired by something Jim did for Amber today, which was a long list of artists/songs to explore. I felt like doing the same, but specifically with a list of Australian music as I feel like my country produces some great artists and sounds that aren’t always heard overseas (not for lack of quality though!)
This isn’t meant to be an authoritative or definitive list. It very much reflects my age and personal tastes, although you might just find something you like amongst it. (Songs suggested can usually be searched on YouTube).
I have seen all these artists live in the past two years (except the ones on hiatus, obviously) and can vouch for their authenticity and awesomeness.
Something For Kate
The love of my life! Incredible lyrics that perfectly describe the human condition and make me feel as though my thoughts have been mined for their inspiration. New album expected in 2012. Listen: Electricity, Twenty Years, Monsters, Deja Vu, Cigarettes and Suitcases, etc!
Paul Dempsey
See Something For Kate: multi-instrumentalist Paul is the frontman and principal songwriter. Released a solo album Everything Is True in 2009 when the band were on hiatus. It changed my life. Listen: Out The Airlock, Ramona Was A Waitress, Fast Friends, Bats.
Papa Vs Pretty
Young “melodic thrash-pop” 3-piece from Sydney, just finished supporting Incubus on their Aus tour. Paul Dempsey produced their ‘Heavy Harm’ EP. Listen: Heavy Harm, Wrecking Ball, One of the Animals, Honey, Darkest Way.
Augie March
Poetic, melodic, heartbreaking, ridiculously underrated. On hiatus, although frontman Glenn Richards has said on Facebook that he’s been writing new songs for another Augie record. Listen: The Hole In Your Roof, Asleep In Perfection, One Crowded Hour, The Cold Acre, This Train Will Be Taking No Passengers, etc.
Glenn Richards
See Augie March: Glenn’s the frontman. Intense live shows and a heartbreakingly beautiful voice. Released a solo album Glimjack in 2010. Listen: Long Pigs, Torpor and Spleen.
Oh Mercy
Sweet indie pop, fronted by the gorgeous Alexander Gow. Listen: Keith Street, Stay Please Stay, Let Me Go.
Adalita
Frontwoman of Magic Dirt (on hiatus), released a self-titled solo album in 2011. Pretty much the queen of Aus music in my opinion! Listen: The Repairer, Hot Air, Fool Around. (See also: Magic Dirt)
Mike Noga
Aka the drummer for rock band The Drones, has also played drums for Paul Dempsey and Glenn Richards’ bands. Folk solo artist in his own right, toured Europe in 2011 supporting Band of Horses. Listen: M’Belle, Ballad of an Ordinary Man. (See also: The Drones)
The Panics
Fantastic indie-pop, atmospheric, layered and engaging. Listen: This Day Last Year, Lost In Green Eyes, Don’t Fight It.
Dan Kelly
His twitter bio says “really deep guy”. Great at storytelling and getting into character for a song, bloody hilarious but incredibly perceptive. Often wears awesome costumes for live shows. Listen: Bindi Irwin Apocalypse Jam, I Will Release Myself (Unto You), Dan Kelly’s Dream.
Those are my main favourites from the last couple of years, although this is only a small portion of the Aussie music out there. Enjoy!
