Is there a song of John’s that you absolutely love and that deeply affects you, but you can’t explain why? You might not be able to pinpoint anything in the lyrics or instrumentation that could be responsible for its profound effect on you, but at the same time you can’t deny it.

For me, this song is Saturation from To Record Only Water for Ten Days. In this video John describes it as a sad song, but asks the audience “have any of you ever had the experience where sad music makes you feel happy?” My answer to that would be “absolutely” - particularly with Saturation. Every time I hear it, I know in my head that it is meant to be sad, yet I somehow find it so light and uplifting. I absolutely love John’s expression beginning at 1.43 in the video; he looks so full of joy and this perfectly represents how the song makes me feel.

Thanks to my Twitter friend Roma for linking me to this video and making me hold back tears in front of everyone at a family gathering! ;) I love that John’s music is so profound as to affect us at any place and time.

Today is To Record Only Water For Ten Days’ and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ birthday. They share the same birthday! (February 13th)

To Record Only Water For Ten Days is 11!

It’s no secret this is my favourite JF record and it made me happy to see a little reminder of this via Twitter this morning (courtesy of @JFruscianteSite) - I’d have missed it otherwise. This record is timeless and will last forever.

The John Frusciante Community: Which of John's albums is your favorite, and WHY?

My favourite album of John’s: To Record Only Water For Ten Days

I absolutely adore this album, not for one big reason but a number of little ones:

- It was the first album of John’s I ever heard. It might be silly, but I often form a sentimental attachment with the first album I experience from any band. (For example, Californication will always be my joint-favourite Chilis album for that reason). I feel like there is a powerful, positive emotion generated when experiencing amazing music for the first time, and every time I listen to To Record those positive feelings are evoked.

- To Record simply reminds me of a happy time in my life. I bought this album sometime in early 2003, when I was in a great place of learning about music and connecting with friends who felt the same passion as me. I had recently soaked in By The Way, and was excited to find out more about John as an artist in his own right. To Record initially challenged me as it sounded nothing like the Chili Peppers, but I came to understand it and it opened the door for me to appreciate a broader range of sounds.

- This album speaks to me spiritually like little else (except maybe the Empyrean). When I first heard it, I had no idea that it was informed by the spirits that are John’s friends, or what any of the lyrics meant. I just knew that it affected me in a weird but powerful way, and still does. It takes me outside of myself and along with it into a different dimension, perhaps. I’m not sure, but there’s little else that makes me feel this way. It’s incredibly transcendent.

I am trying to get a healthy discussion started here with people who I know are passionate about the music that they hold dear to their hearts.

To pick just ONE single album is so incredibly difficult in my opinion because each of his works effects the next and they really are all connected in…

“To Record Only Water for Ten Days” Press Statement.

Between 1992 and 1997 John Frusciante had many periods where his main social activity was with spirits manifested as voices, thought waves, astral bodies and decay of physical matter. The things they taught him (often in non-earth language, but often in English) are contained in this record’s words. The feelings of this music is the feelings of the spirits John Frusciante is friends with.

Fuck. Yes.
